Château de Châteauneuf

The history of the castle begins in 1175 with a keep built on a promontory overlooking the valley through which the Burgundy canal now flows. The 13th century saw the construction of a sumptuous chapel. During the Hundred Years' War, it was fortified by a powerful wall and five towers. In 1460, Philippe Pot became the owner of the castle. He was the private adviser of the Duke of Burgundy, Philip the Good, and one of the knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece. He added two dwellings to the castle and refurbished the chapel. On the mantle of the monumental fireplace in the Great Hall still appears Philip Pot's motto "Tant L Vault". The chapel is entirely decorated with 15th century wall paintings representing Christ and the apostles. Also worth seeing is the polychrome replica of Philippe Pot's tomb, the original of which is kept in the Louvre. From the 16th century onwards, the castle was owned by several great families, including the Montmorency and Vienne families. In 1936, Count Georges de Vogüé gave the castle to the State. The collections were enriched with a beautiful suite of 7 17th century tapestries representing episodes in the life of Moses. Apart from some interior modifications, the castle has retained its medieval character. The Burgundy-Fraanche-Comté Region has volunteered to continue the restoration of the castle and make it the centrepiece of a heritage and cultural project linked to the region. Well beyond its tourist dimension, the castle is part of the region's identity and collective memory. Visits, activities, summer events, exhibitions, archaeological research... a monument that cannot be ignored and is fully alive!
