le Lion de Bartholdi

A symbol of the town's heroic resistance during the attack of 1870-1871, the lion of belfort was created by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the famous sculptor behind the Statue of Liberty. Built against the cliffs of the Citadel in blocks of pink sandstone, today the lion is an integral part of the town's identity. Standing 11 m high and 22 m long, its proportions are gigantic. When night falls, the Lion is illuminated to protect and light up the town and creating a magical scene in the Belfort sky.

Hours

From 1 October to 31 March every day from 9.30am to 12.30pm and from 2pm to 6pm. From 1 April to 31 August every day from 10am to 12.30pm and from 2pm to 6.30pm. Annual closure of the Lion of Bartholdi on 1 January, 1 November and 25 December.
