Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), the inventor of the rabies vaccine, returned to Arbois during his lifetime. His house has been preserved intact. From the billiard room to the laboratory, you will enter the intimacy of the scientist. Garden. The house, recognised as a Maison des Illustres in 2013, belongs to the Jura Museums network. Louis Pasteur's house in Arbois is an absolutely unique heritage site, still inhabited by the presence of the scientist. The house has been preserved as it was when Louis Pasteur lived in it and immerses the visitor in the life and work of the scientist. Classified as a Historic Monument, Louis Pasteur's house in Arbois was awarded the "Maisons des Illustres" label by the Ministry of Culture and Communication in 2011, at the same time as the house in Dole. Pasteur came back to this house in Arbois all his life, it is the only one he owned. Little remains of his father's modest tannery, where he spent his childhood, because Louis Pasteur transformed this house into his "Château de la Cuisance", and fitted it out to his taste. In this house, to which he returned every year, Pasteur combined business with pleasure: surrounded by his family and friends in the living room or in the dining room, he could devote himself to his research in his private laboratory. It was in Arbois that he carried out his work on fermentations and it was there that he developed the famous pasteurisation. Thanks to the experiments carried out in his vineyard in Montigny-les-Arsures, he was able to definitively challenge the belief in the spontaneous generation of micro-organisms. From the billiard table to the bedroom, meet the scientist in the intimacy of this incredibly well-preserved house. Discover his personal laboratory, preserved intact and still inhabited by the soul of its illustrious owner and by the effervescence of his Jura experiments. The site is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. The house, recognised as a "Maison des Illustres" in 2013, belongs to the Jura Museums network.
